Uluṟu Beach I is an original oil painting and series inception work by Northern Rivers artist Melani du Jardin, inspired by a remarkable photograph taken by her father, landscape photographer Ian Jardine, during a period of flooding at Uluṟu in the 1980s.
The photograph captures an unexpected scene in the heart of Australia's arid interior: water gathered against ancient rock, creating a fleeting beach-like landscape.
Working from her father's photographic composition, du Jardin reimagines the scene through expressive brushwork, luminous colour and richly worked surfaces. Warm pinks and corals meet shifting blues and pale reflections, transforming the landscape into an intimate meditation on memory, place and the passage of time.
The painting forms part of an evolving body of 'grief work' honouring Ian Jardine's photographic legacy. Through painting, du Jardin continues a creative conversation between father and daughter, separated by time but connected through their shared fascination with the Australian landscape.
